The World Languages and Cultures Department hosts a screening of Saint Omer, a narrative film by French (Franco-Senegalese) film maker Alice Diop, on Wednesday, November 15, 2023 at 4 pm in Webb 110. This one-time screening and discussion is made possible by grant from Eastern’s JEDI Faculty. All members of the University community are welcome to attend.
Saint Omer (2022) is a court drama that centers on the lives of two Black (immigrant) women, one accused of causing her toddler's death, the other a writer attending the trial to write about the case. The film is a fictionalized telling of the real-life trial and conviction of young Senegalese-French woman Fabienne Kabou.
The film is highly acclaimed, winning dozens of film awards, including the Silver Lion Grand Jury prize at the 2022 Venice Film Festival. One critic stated, “the gripping legal proceedings touch on race, class, gender, culture and the tide of history and power.” Another called it, “breathtakingly, soul-shakingly, intelligent, beautiful, empathetic, this one gets a 10 out of 10.”
Dr. Michèle Bacholle, a CSU French & Women’s Studies professor, will lead a discussion immediately following the screening.
