Alexis Lyonnais ’17

Psychology major and Criminology minor Alexis Lyonnais is a full-time social work trainee with the Department of Children and Families (DCF). “Minoring in criminology has allowed me to explore the juvenile justice system and understand how kids may end up in ‘the system,’ whether through acts of delinquency or socioeconomic status.”

Laura Markley ’15

Environmental Earth Science major Laura Markley ’15 earned her Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at Syracuse University and now works there in the Center for Sustainable Community Solutions. Her research focuses on the life cycle and environmental impact of plastics. “What I most appreciate about Eastern are the relationships I developed with professors. They allowed me to find my niche and learn what I really enjoy doing.”

Jennifer is an adjunct psychology professor at Eastern Connecticut State University and the University of Connecticut. “My experience in Eastern’s psychology department has profoundly influenced my work ethic and teaching style. My professors challenged me to be the best version of myself in an environment that was both academically rigorous and empathetic. I strive to create this balance for my own students.”

Cy earned his master’s degree in architecture at Florida International University in 2021. He works as a design coordinator at Stantec and aspires to design eco-friendly, sustainable buildings. “I’ve always been interested in working with my hands, that’s why I’m an artist. Brittany is senior product manager at Amwell. She started her IT career as an on-campus intern in Cigna’s Technology Early Career Development Program before moving to Diameter Health and now to Amwell. “The internship opened so many doors for my career.”

Sierra is academic services coordinator at the University of Connecticut’s Hartford campus. She interned in South Africa for the Surplus People Project, a nonprofit organization that supports farm workers. “Traveling abroad is very valuable. By living in another culture you start to understand other viewpoints, which expands your knowledge of how the world works.”

Kevin Connolly ’17

Kevin was a Barnard Scholar at Eastern, earned his master’s degree in medical laboratory sciences at Quinnipiac University and is now pursuing a doctorate at Brown University in molecular biology. “At Eastern I was fortunate to formulate my own research question and learn not only the satisfaction of obtaining significant findings, but the hardships that go along with conducting research and how to overcome those struggles.”

Nelson is a first-generation college student who received the Barnard Award, the highest academic recognition of the Connecticut state universities. “I knew going to college was the only option if I was going to change the cycle of poverty my family had endured for generations. Being recognized for the Henry Barnard award has taught me that hard work really does pay off.”

Amanda is Director of Behavioral Health at Wood River Health Services. “The faculty at Eastern instilled confidence in me that I could pursue a successful career in psychology following graduation. They gave me guidance on what strategies to use to get into graduate school, how to sort through programs and what classes to take.”
