On Monday, November 8, Eastern welcomes Marcelino Truong, a Paris-based artist, graphic designer and illustrator, for an artist’s workshop via Zoom. Truong will speak about his long career of working with graphic novels, as well as give a demonstration of his creative process and techniques.
This workshop was coordinated by Dr. Michèle Bacholle, a CSU French professor, as one of Eastern’s events supporting the NEA’s Big Read initiative. Bacholle and Truong forged a professional relationship as an outgrowth of their conversations about multicultural representation in French children’s literature, a topic Bacholle explored with a variety of French-speaking authors, including Truong, in her book, Paroles d’auteurs Jeunesse (2013).
Two of Truong’s graphic memoirs, Such a Lovely Little War and Saigon Calling, dovetail well with this year’s Big Read selection, The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui. Each of these memoirs use the visually powerful medium of the graphic novel to share personal stories with ties to Vietnam.
Marcelino Truong’s workshop will be held via Zoom on Nov 8, 2021 12:30 pm. The workshop is open to the Eastern community, as well as the general public. Advanced registration is required. Visit here to register.
