Every spring semester the World Languages and Cultures Department recognizes its exceptional Spanish language students by welcoming them into the Sigma Delta Pi Spanish National Honor Society.
Normally this membership induction ceremony is a true gathering, bringing together current inductees, faculty, Eastern administrators and alumni of the Spanish program and honor society. However, after Eastern closed its campus in March of 2020 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, hosting such a gathering was impossible.
Fortunately, the World Languages and Cultures Department was still able to celebrate the academic accomplishments of its students. On May 14, 2020 three students – Analía Correa, Brianna Nolan and Ashley Smith – were inducted into the Nu Chi Chapter of the Sigma Delta Pi Honor Society via a virtual ceremony. The honor society’s faculty advisor, Dr. Kin Chan, had to come up with an alternative way to make the virtual ceremony as similar to the in-person experience as possible, complete with candle lightings and certificate presentations. The ceremony was supported by past inductees, Carli Palmer and Jaran Smith, both Eastern 2020 graduates.
Even in the face of a global pandemic, it was important to maintain this more than 30-year-long tradition. We hope that 2021 brings the opportunity to once again gather together in this celebration.
