In 2014-15, CAB sponsored 139 events ranging from concerts, comedians and cultural awareness events, to music lounges, weekend trips and late night-themed events, with a total of 21,855 attendees. Additional events were organized by clubs and organizations throughout the year. The Student Government Association (SGA) provided leadership and coordination for 80 student clubs ranging from the Accounting Society to the Visual Arts Club, involving a total of 1,198 students.
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge made its way to campus last September after President Núñez challenged the student body to participate in the awareness-raising campaign for Lou Gehrig's disease. More than 100 students, faculty and staff answered the call and had ice water dumped over the heads. Mike Burke, executive director of the ALS Association Connecticut Chapter, visited campus for the event and introduced the challenge and the cause it supports.
The Education Club traveled to Hopeville Elementary School in Waterbury, CT, last winter for an "academic carnival" hosted by the Connecticut Education Association's Student Program (CEA-SP). Eastern created an activity for children to complete during the carnival that reflected the overall theme-"the Winter Games."
"Be the Match," a bone marrow registry drive, made its annual visit to campus last December. Organizers were overwhelmed by the response, as more than 200 students, faculty and staff registered. To date, more than 1,000 members of the Eastern community have registered to be a possible match for those in need of a bone marrow transplant.
