Mathematics Achievement Center (MAC)

The Mathematics Achievement Center (MAC) is a free math tutoring service offered by the the Mathematical Sciences department. The Director of the MAC is Mrs. Kathleen Dale. Mrs. Dale coordinates the student tutors, all of whom are have completed tutoring certification. All of the student tutors are also certified. Math faculty will also be staffing the MAC. Mathematics Achievement Center (MAC) FAQs

  • The MAC is located on the first floor of the J. E. Smith Library, Room 130. The MAC phone number is (860) 465 - 0383.

  • The MAC is equipped with textbooks and software accommodating all courses for which the center will service.

  • As stated on the course syllabus, all students enrolled in MAT 099, MAT 135P, and MAT 155P must work in the MAC for a minimum of 14 hours during the semesterMAC participation will be counted as 10% of your final course grade.  

    TThe midterm grade calculation will be based on completing 7 hours in the MAC by Friday, October 11, 2024. The final course grade calculation will be based on completing a total of 14 hours in the MAC by Tuesday, November 26, 2024.

    Student MAC hours will only be recorded when the MAC is officially open, and tutors are on duty.  Students are not allowed to miss class in order to attend the MAC.  Students should be proactive in keeping track of their required MAC hours.     You may only receive credit for 3 hours a day.  You are welcome to stay as long as you wish, but you will only receive credit for the first 3 hours.

  • As part of the Academic Services Center, the MAC is here to make your Eastern educational experience as successful and stress free as possible. While in the MAC, students may be engaged in the following activities:

    • Take assessment tests
    • Work with the TI-83/84/89 calculator
    • Work with one of the previously mentioned software products on a computer
    • Have a conference
    • Homework
    • Work through practice sheets
    • Review quizzes or test
    • Study skills, work on time management and lecture notes
    • Tutoring
    • Use of applicable textbooks
  • First, you need to bring your Eastern ID because you will need to scan in and out of the MAC. Secondly, you need to sign in and out on the login sheet in order to receive credit for the time spent in the MAC. You will only receive credit for your time when the MAC is open for business. You will not be credited with any time if you show up before the MAC is open.

  • Tutoring is available on a non-appointment basis.

  • The MAC does not guarantee that you will receive one-on-one tutoring. The volume of students in the MAC will determine whether tutoring occurs in small groups or individually.

     

  • You should make an appointment at Tutoring Services, also located in Library Room 130. Please note that when you arrive for that scheduled appointment, you will still need to scan in and out of the MAC and sign in and out on the login sheet if you are enrolled in MAT 099, MAT 135P, or MAT 155P.

  • Yes, the Mathematics Achievement Center is open during the week of final exams. The hours may be affected. Updated hours of operation will be posted closer to final exams week. Please view the document when it is posted here.
