State Budget Update & Governor’s Directive
- Dr. Núñez discussed the broad challenges facing the University and the State in Fiscal Years 2011 and 2012.
- Dr. Salka provided information to the group on the Budget Implementer Bills being considered by the General Assembly
Internal Budget Allocations
- Departmental budget allocations were primarily based on the reduction plan reviewed and approved by the Ad Hoc Budget Committees. Overall, the average departmental reduction was approximately 10%.
- It was noted that over 60% of departments achieved savings in their FY 2009 budgets that meets or exceeds the savings included as part of the FY 2010 budget allocations.
- Dr. Núñez discussed the benefit of her informal budget meetings with all Vice Presidents. The discussions allowed the reallocation of certain resources to areas of critical need.
- Committee members emphasized the need for early notification on all phases of the budget development and allocation process.
Science Lab Fees
- Dr. Hyatt discussed in detail his concerns about the implementation of the CSU Board approved science lab fees ($50 per course)
- Dr. Hyatt emphasized the need to have clear communications with students and that a Spring implementation of the fee is too soon. He expressed that the implementation of the fee and the development of a plan to use the revenue was more complex than meets the eye.
- The committee began an in-depth discussion of the matter.
