Eastern's Eighth Annual Poverty Awareness Marathon
Eastern Connecticut State University held its eighth annual Poverty Awareness Marathon on Sept. 23. More than 400 food items were donated to the Covenant Soup Kitchen and Windham Area Interfaith Ministry as more than 350 members of the Eastern community ran, walked or pledged to alleviate poverty.
Eastern's 24th Annual Health, Wellness and Benefits Expo
Eastern Connecticut State University hosted its annual Health, Wellness and Benefits Expo on Oct. 18 during which members of the Eastern campus and surrounding towns visited the Student Center and took advantage of free health screenings and browsed the offerings of more than 50 health-related vendors.
'Pedro, The Great Pretender' Opens New Proscenium Theatre
November 2016 will go down in history for Eastern's Theatre Program, as its first Main Stage production in the new Proscenium Theatre premiered. "Cervantes' Pedro, The Great Pretender" christened the new theatre from Nov. 8-13.
Eastern Faculty Create 'Democracy at Work'
With the 2016 presidential election drawing near, politics have taken center stage at Eastern Connecticut State University. In order to generate student discussion around the election, Eastern faculty created a series of events titled "Democracy at Work," featuring more than 25 activities focused on various aspects of the campaign.
Unity Wing Open House
Committed student ambassadors working in the Arthur L. Johnson Unity Wing of Eastern's Student Center greeted the university community at an open house on Jan. 18 for the three centers housed in the wing: the Pride Center, Intercultural Center and Women's Center.
Eastern Continues Unmatched Support of Marrow Registry
Since 2012, Eastern Connecticut State University has rallied in support of people with life-threatening blood diseases, hosting six marrow registries in four years. Eastern's total number of registrants jumped to 1,438 on Dec. 1, after an additional 316 people added themselves to the "Be The Match" database, the largest marrow registry in the world.
Eastern Took the Plunge for Hunger
Hundreds of people, including members of the Eastern Connecticut State University campus community, took a dive into the cold waters of the Natchaug River on Feb. 4 to raise money for the Covenant Soup Kitchen. Many participants dressed in costumes as they stood on the river banks in 30 degree weather.
Eastern Unity Wing Organizes Social Justice Week
Leaders and student ambassadors of the Intercultural Center, Pride Center and Women's Center at Eastern Connecticut State University organized a series of events for Social Justice Week from March 6-10 to raise awareness and educate students about social issues that impact Eastern's campus and society as a whole.
Fun Mud Day Returns to Eastern
The preschool children of Eastern Connecticut State University's Child and Family Development Resource Center will participate in the Second Annual Fun Mud Day on May 8 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Eastern students majoring in physical education will be offering support and motivation to the children throughout the day.
Occum Hall wins Warrior Cup, Puentes al Futuro gets $4,500
The Warrior Cup is an annual competition in which all 13 residence halls at Eastern Connecticut State University compete for the benefit of a local nonprofit organization or charity. Occum Hall was the 2016-17 winner of the cup, but the real winner is Puentes al Futuro (Bridges to the Future), a Windham Public Schools afterschool program, which received $4,500 from the year's Warrior Cup activities.
