Eastern Connecticut State University’s second annual Student Center Block Party took place on Sept. 13, highlighting the various centers, spaces and resources available to students in the Student Center. The Unity Wing, Student Government Association (SGA), Office of Student Activities and the Fitness Center were present and provided snacks and activities for students to engage in.
Students checked in at a table, where they were given a passport-like card with all the different parts of the Student Center. They were encouraged to go to all of them, receive a stamp and enter a raffle for a gift basket full of Eastern-themed goods.
One of the stops was the Intercultural Center. Nyla Graham, a student ambassador, explained that the Intercultural Center provides “a variety of resources.” From a library full of cultural literature to a space designated for praying, “it serves as a safe space for students who are coming from different cultural backgrounds,” she added.
The next stop was the Pride Center. It offers “a physical footprint at Eastern’s campus for the LGBTQIA+ community and allies,” said Rachel Betts, a graduate intern for the Pride Center. She said she enjoys how “undergraduates come in everyday and leave with a better sense of who they are.”
Next was the Fitness Center, where students have access to a variety of machines for physical fitness and wellness. The center now utilizes an app called "Redprint" for tracking fitness goals.
On the second floor, the Office of Student Activities made its presence known. This office oversees clubs and student organizations, including the Campus Activity Board, special events and many other initiatives. Jenfrey Florentino, assistant director of student activities, explained that he is most looking forward to “large-scale events like Fall Fest and Spring Fest.”
The Women’s Center was another stop at the Block Party. Student Ambassador Sammy Vertucci said that they “make a space for justice and equity for all.” This segment of the Unity Wing is a welcoming space that offers a variety of resources as well as events throughout the year.
The Student Government Association, known as SGA, aims to act as a passage of communication between students and the administration. “It lets you get involved on campus,” said Senator Gabby Papale. She also enjoys how “it lets you learn what’s important to students.”
