Two students from Eastern Connecticut State University recently traveled to Cleveland, Ohio, for the SHAPE America National Convention — the nation’s leading convention for health and physical education professionals. Jessica Pyrek-Bennett ’24 and Isiah Lovell ’24 received the Outstanding Future Professional Award this past fall, qualifying them for recognition as Major of the Year at the national convention.
Other recipients of the award attended the conference as well. The forum provided space for awardees to meet future colleagues and peers. “It was really special,” Pyrek-Bennett said. “It was great to be in an atmosphere where you are completely surrounded by everyone with the same passion as you from all around the world.”
Lovell agreed, saying the conference “provided a great environment to immerse (himself) in diverse groups of educators. It was a melting pot of knowledge and experiences.”
Candidates for the award must hold themselves to high academic standards, demonstrate their leadership both inside and outside the classroom and actively work to better their university and the communities they live in. The award is a testament to the work put in by both Lovell and Pyrek-Bennett during their studies as physical education majors.
“It was an honor to represent Eastern Connecticut State University on a national stage," said Lovell. "It was a moment of validation for the dedication and hard work I've put into my role as an educator.”
Pyrek-Bennett seconded these sentiments, stating, “It was an honor to represent Eastern. I was extremely proud of myself and all of the other recipients. It made me realize that all of my hard work behind the scenes did not go unnoticed.”
The students attribute their accomplishments to the thoughtful guidance of their mentors at Eastern. “I attribute all of my success to my peers and professors,” said Lovell. “They have given me numerous opportunities to guide them. This has given me the confidence to feel comfortable in the classroom, creating an environment most conducive for student learning.”
“Having such a supportive, close group of professors is unbeatable,” Pyrek-Bennett said. “With their guidance, I’ve learned to embrace challenges, communicate effectively and inspire others with confidence. Their support has not only enhanced my academic experience but has also shaped me into a more self-aware and impactful leader, ready to navigate the complexities of the world beyond the gymnasium.”
