Placement Information

All students must complete the foundational Writing and Math requirement within their first 30 credits earned - typically first or second semester. Please find additional information below regarding the placement process and appropriate course selection.

Writing Placement

The foundational Writing courses offered at Eastern are:

ENG 100 College Writing
ENG 100P College Writing Plus

ENG 100 - College Writing: 3 credit course, meets 3 hours per week, writing tutors available outside of class as needed; ENG 100P - College Writing Plus: 5 credit course, meets 5 hours per week (additional 'lab time' with instructor, peer writing tutors, and small-group work to draft, review and revise writing), writing tutors available outside of class as needed

Writing placement is determined by standardized test scores (SAT/ACT) when available, or, by completing a writing placement survey. Your survey will be reviewed by English department faculty, and the most appropriate writing course will be recommended.

Students who have completed and passed the AP English Composition exam with a 3 or higher, or completed an equivalent college-level writing course may be waived from the foundational writing requirement. Please consult with an advisor regarding specific placement questions, or contact the Director of the University Writing Program, Dr. Rita Malenczyk.

Some students may need to complete MAT 099 – Algebra Essentials prior to registering for a foundational math course. This three-credit course counts toward your GPA and full-time status, but does not count toward graduation. After successful completion of MAT 099, students take MAT 135P, 139P or 155P (choice of course determined with advisor) in the following semester.

Individual math placement is determined by:

  1. Standardized test scores (SAT/ACT) if available. Students who submit standardized test scores are still eligible to take the Accuplacer Test if interested in reassessing their math placement.
  2. Accuplacer Test score. Accuplacer is a computerized adaptive, multiple choice, untimed test. This means your correct/incorrect responses will determine the number and type of problems you will see. Results from the Accuplacer are available right away, allowing you to register for the most appropriate math course. Accuplacer tests are offered on campus throughout the year.
  3. Passing specific AP exam(s) or completing an equivalent college course. Students who:
    • Pass the AP Calculus or Precalculus exam with a 3 or higher may be waived from the foundational math requirement.
    • Pass an equivalent math course (sometimes offered through ECE or Dual-Enrollment credits at your high school) may be waived from the foundational math requirement.
    • Pass the AP Statistics exam with a 3 or higher may be automatically placed into a foundational math course.
    • Transfer in credits for a math course that is not an approved foundational math course may be automatically placed into a foundational math course.

Please consult with an advisor regarding specific placement questions, and to determine if additional math courses are required for your major.
