Windham Recovery Center, Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery
The Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery, strives to "put a positive face on recovery" by connecting Eastern Students to local residents who are recovering from a life altering substance use addiction. Students have the opportunity to assist CCAR members in applying for jobs, building their resume, practicing interviewing skills, etc. *NOTE: In order to volunteer at CCAR, all volunteers must attend a training session and complete a background check. Training is provided to volunteers before they begin attending the program.
The Covenant Soup Kitchen
The Covenant Soup Kitchen's mission is to address the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and cultural needs of those that come through their doors by providing not only food, but an environment of care, love, support and safety. Volunteers assist in greeting clients, preparing and distributing meals and attending to the needs of the clients.
Douglas Manor Pen Pal Program
Douglas Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center specializes in short-term rehabilitation with the goal of getting residents back to the community as quickly as possible. As a family owned and operated facility, they provide exceptional caring in a patient-centered environment. Eastern students participate in a pen pal program with Douglas Manor residents, writing letters and sending care packages.
The Windham Region No Freeze Hospitality Center, Inc. is an agency dedicated to providing a safe and warm overnight space for individuals experiencing homelessness during winter months. In addition, No Freeze connects adults experiencing homelessness to local and regional services. Volunteers assist staff with sign-in protocols, distribution of showering supplies and bedding. Volunteers take a great part in socializing with guests, making them feel welcome, playing games, assisting guests on the computer and filling out forms. Activities can be held at the shelter, in the community, or on campus.
St. Joseph Living Center
St. Joseph Living Center has an extensive recreational department that works with senior citizen residents to keep them physically and mentally active. Eastern students will participate in person with the recreation department. Volunteers will work with their student leader to create arts and crafts and various activities for the residents.
*Note: In order to volunteer at St. Joseph, you must attend a training session, complete a background check, have the first two Covid vaccines and the booster.
Windham Hospital Program
Windham Hospital is looking for students who are interested in going into the medical field. Volunteer opportunities are available in the following areas: ACU Unit Aide, Cardiac Rehab, Emergency Department, Information Desk, Oncology Department Family Health Center or Central Processing and Unit Volunteers. Spots are limited. An interview and background check are required for this program. Health Science and Bio Majors only!! No transportation is provided for this program as the Hospital is within walking distance of campus.
Blue Iris Animal Farm
This program is built to be catering to students interested in animal science, biology, anatomy, and veterinary medicine. Volunteers will assist in feeding, walking, and caring for farm animals, as well as additional miscellaneous tasks such as cleaning and painting as needed. Those interested in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine will get the opportunity to administer shots, conduct hoof/nail trimming, grooming and hygienic care, and take vitals under the supervision of a professional.
