Rod Faulds is a seasoned museum professional and educator. As an undergraduate he studied photography and printmaking. He holds an MA in Exhibition Design and a Certificate in Museum Studies from California State University, Fullerton. He is Director, University Galleries at Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton.
Beginning in 2009 after a 30-year hiatus from image-making Faulds began to employ digital photography to create abstract works caught somewhere between photography and painting. Initially these photo-based art works blended hundreds of photographic images into gridded patterns of light and color. More recently fewer images are combined, collaged and montaged to create bolder images that conflate figuration and abstraction. Creating gritty or confounding abstractions from overlooked construction sites or other everyday domestic situations drives Faulds more than employing photographs to narrate, depict or deceive, yet photographic veracity plays an important role.
Faulds career as a curator, exhibition designer/producer has provided a strong critical approach to his now habitual image making. While a good deal of the image making continues through the camera and computer, a nascent studio practice is emerging that employs collage and assemblage to create display situations or installations that both engage and subvert his experience in presenting art in gallery environments. In 2014 a one-person exhibition at the Hollywood Art & Culture Center provided the opportunity to present selections from the Surf Works series in a unique wall installation. More recently the group exhibition Polyopia at Delray Beach’s Art Warehouse provided a sizeable corner space with two walls, one of which he covered wall paper style, with pendaflex folders providing a backdrop for three of the six framed works included in the exhibition.
Beginning in 2013 Faulds began exhibiting his work including the Paducah (Kentucky) School of Art's National Photography Invitational. In 2014 his work was featured in a one-person exhibition mentioned above at the Hollywood Art and Culture Center, Hollywood, Florida. He has been featured in two group exhibitions at the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County (2016, 2019) and a two person show with Isabel Gouvela at FAU’s Theater Lab Gallery in 2018.
Faulds' 2020 artist presentation for Art Salon a long running series of artist talks produced by Ellie Schorr in association with the Armory Art Center, West Palm Beach.
