Suggestions for Academic Success

KEEP YOUR CREDIT LOAD MANAGEABLE
We recommend attempting a maximum of 15 credits per semester.

EVALUATE YOUR PERSONAL AND ACADEMIC GOALS
Is your chosen major consistent with your interests and abilities? Talk to Professional Advisor at the Advising Center or make an appointment with someone at the Office of Career Services.

REPEAT COURSES WHERE YOU HAVE EARNED A GRADE OF D OR F
This is often the fastest way to raise your grade point average.

ASK TUTORS FOR HELP
Students and staff at the Academic Success Center are eager to help; Visit them at J. Eugene Smith Library Rooms 107 & 108 or give them a call and make an appointment at (860)-465-5198.

ASK PEERS FOR HELP
Create connections with other students - this can help with forming study groups to reinforce the learning of course material. For assistance in forming a study group contact the Tutoring Services.

DEVELOP A BALANCED SCHEDULE
Carefully choose your classes and meet with your assigned Faculty Advisor and/or your assigned Student Development Specialist at the Advising Center. Make sure that your courses fulfill LAC, major, minor, concentration, and teacher certification requirements, also take into consideration other obligations that could influence how much time you devote to your classes.

ATTEND CLASSES AND BE ON TIME
The best students are conscientious and take responsibility for their own education.

STUDY, STUDY, STUDY
In order to succeed, research finds that you need to study for 2-3 hours for every hour that you are in class. Therefore, if you are taking 12 credits - that is 36 hours of studying!

GET ENOUGH SLEEP
Research finds that one of the most important predictors for success in college is how much sleep a students gets - however, most college students get well below the recommended 8-9 hours of sleep a night.

PARTICIPATION IN OTHER ACTIVITIES
If you choose to participate in other activities, make sure that they relate to your personal and career goals and that they do not become obstacles to your academic success.

WORKING AND TAKING CLASSES
If you are a full-time student, we recommend that you work, at most, 10-15 hours/week. Remember, 12 -15 hours per week in classes and 36 hours of studying is equivalent to having a full-time job.

TALK TO YOUR INSTRUCTOR
The faculty members at Eastern want you to succeed! They are the first person you should meet with if you have any questions about a class.
