Graduating artists showcased in Senior Art Exhibition

"Humanity" by Jeffrey Bowling—flat world map wall installation incorporating red yarn woven between blue continents.

A series of paintings by Mackenzie Hill that depicts the various uses of God's hands throughout the Bible.

“Unmasked” by Noah Yilmaz—made from 100 of disposable face masks as a commentary on the pandemic.

The Art Gallery at Eastern Connecticut State University opened its final show of the 2020-21 academic year on May 7. The annual Senior Art Exhibition showcases the artwork of 31 graduating seniors in the Art and Art History Department who have worked on their creations throughout the semester. The exhibit runs through May 16. To view the exhibition online, visit the Art Gallery’s website.

As a portfolio requirement for students who major in digital art and design, illustration, new media studies and studio art, the exhibition features artwork with themes ranging from COVID-19 to mental illness, with mediums that include animation, landscape paintings, brand packaging and more.

“You are the most courageous people at this university because you put it all out there, using your craft and systematic approaches,” said Carmen Cid, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. “It’s this kind of creativity, innovation and courage that gets you through life.”

Terry Lennox, chair of the Art and Art History Department, said, “Dedication. That is one thing made clear here. The amount of dedication that you have put in and the quality of the work shows that you’re thinking and doing your research to decide on the work of art that you want to pursue.”

The Art Gallery is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and weekends by appointment. All events are free and open to the public. For more information, email: tikhonovay@easternct.edu or visit www.easternct.edu/artgallery/.
