The fifth annual #WarriorsGive campaign generated $98,195 over a four-day period that concluded on Nov. 16. Including $38,900 from two matching gifts by the Jeffrey P. Ossen Family Foundation and an anonymous donor, 327 donors contributed to the online campaign; 83 percent of them were Eastern alumni. Darrell Stock, Jr. ’80, a pharmacist from California, made the largest gift of $20,000. Mr. Stock is in the process of establishing an endowed scholarship.
Families and organizations looking for new ways to engage young children during the age of COVID-19 can refer to a growing library of online content produced by students at Eastern Connecticut State University. Throughout the fall semester, student volunteers through Eastern’s Center for Community Engagement (CCE) have been creating and uploading short educational videos to the CCE’s Facebook and YouTube pages. The Ecological Society of America (ESA) is offering a free online collection of articles representing 15 years of environmental justice research published across the Society's six journals. Eastern’s Dean of Arts and Sciences Carmen Cid, a pioneering ecologist and ESA governing board member-elect, is one of the collection’s two editors. Cid and co-editor Gillian Bowser, professor at Colorado State University, focused on incorporating human dimensions and justice issues into the collection. Read More
Eastern held its annual Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11. The event streamed on YouTube and featured guest speaker Mel Graf, retired colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves and current associate dean of student development at Johnson and Wales University. Graf reflected on the realities of deployment and thanked past and present members of the Armed Services for their service and sacrifice to the United States. Mel served for many years in Eastern’s Department of Athletics.
